The Importance of Celebrating Diversity and Giving Back During Hispanic Heritage Month

By Gregg MacDonald

At WellCare, we take great pride in celebrating the diversity of our members and our associates.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (celebrated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15), we recognize the culture, traditions, history and important contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 60 million people, or 18% of the U.S. population, identifies as Hispanic or Latino in origin – the largest minority in the United States.

Celebrating Diversity & Inclusion: A Business Imperative

At WellCare, we make it a priority to tap the diverse backgrounds and cultural experiences of our associates to develop the next generation of leaders, promote community involvement and drive business results. We accomplish this, in part, through our Associate Resource Groups (ARGs), which help us unlock cultural insights that can enhance the experience and engagement of our associates, members, providers and business partners.

As we take time to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m proud to serve as the executive sponsor of WellCare’s Hispanic ARG. Through the ARG, we not only celebrate our Hispanic and Latino culture, we encourage all of our colleagues to participate in community and corporate events planned not only this month but throughout the year.

Among recent accomplishments and milestones:

  • HisMonth1
WellCare Hispanic ARG members provided 6,900 meals volunteering with the Houston Food Bank.

WellCare’s Hispanic ARG believes strongly in giving back to those we serve. Together, this month, our more than 490 ARG members will participate in volunteer events across the country ranging from food pantries to senior centers to home builds. We proudly volunteered 530 hours in 2018 and more than 880 hours so far in 2019 and are expecting more than 1,300 hours by the end of the year.

  • In Hawaii, our ARG members partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island to find ways to give back to children and teens who are homeless, in the foster care system or facing other challenges. Thanks to their efforts, the WellCare Community Foundation donated $10,000 to support 250 children in the club’s after school program and will help cover the annual cost of needed supplies, including books and athletic equipment, as well as room enhancements for the organization’s teen room and computer center. Local ‘Ohana Health Plan volunteers and ARG members participated in an event on Sept. 10 and plan to donate their time to improve the club’s facility for the new school year.

  • In Florida, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at our corporate headquarters with a speaker’s event series, including conversations on such hot topics as health, education, business and immigration.

At WellCare, we believe our understanding of heritages, cultures and experiences strengthens our collective ability to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and comfortable bringing their full selves to work, and we will continue to work toward that goal in the months and years ahead.
